Himachal talk at San Diego Museum of Art by Kamla and Payson

dsc_0099-11.jpgMy Himachal advisors Payson R. Stevens and Kamla K. Kapur gave a presentation at the San Diego Museum of Art on March 10, 2007.

They described their life in the Kullu Valley where they live half of the year. Known as the Valley of the Gods, it is a unique region filled with old-growth cedar forests and ancient devta and devi (male and female deities) religious practice. The slide presentation discussed aspects of the devta culture, the natural environment, and issues living in a region where people still carry on daily activities the way their forefathers did hundreds of years ago. Examples of Kullu Valley crafts, including shawls, woven slippers, wollen putti and topis were shown. Kapur read from her new book, GANESHA GOES TO LUNCH (www.kamlakkapur.com). The talk was well received and Stevens discussed My Himachal’s efforts to improve the lives of people in the Kullu Valley and Himachal Pradesh. Flyers of the My Himachal’s recent projects were handed out.

With My Himachal President, Dr. Bhugol Chandel’s continuous efforts, a bridge on Gobind Sagar is sanctioned by Himachal government. A 330 meter long double laned motorable bridge would be constructed at a cost of Rs. 48 crore to connect Talwad and Beri Darolan in district Bilaspur. The foundation stone of the bridge will be laid by the Chief Minister, Virbhadra Singh on 23rd March during Nalwar fair.

When completed, the construction of this bridge is going to benefit people of Bilaspur, Hamirpur and Kangra districts. “We visioned the construction of this bridge in 1984 to help development of the area “, said Dr. Chandel. During his last visit to India meeting with Himachal Chief Minister and forest minister Ram Lal Thakur he asked Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh to start the construction work of this bridge during this year.

“We are thankful to present government of Virbhadra Singh and its developmental policies for the rural areas,” said Dr. Chandel. Dr. Chandel gives credit of this achievement to continuous support of fellow Himachalis via My Himachal discussion forum and emails. He also thanks people and local political leaders from Bilaspur behind this endeavor. This bridge was his life dream and he congrats everyone associated with this initiative.

My Himachal sponsored health worker’s training update

My Himachal sponsored health worker’s training update

Lady Willigdon’s CHAI project based in Jibhi selected sixteen women for training through the Jibhi Clinic in 2006 via a participatory community based approach with the help of My Himachal. We held an intensive month of training in November 2006 but although we did get exposure to patients preseting at Jibhi clinic the team was always aware that patient numbers were not sufficient for broad exposure to common diseases. A week of training in our parent hospital in Manali was always planned. It has now been completed with great success.
